Actor brings timeless modernism to classic knitwear.
John Smedley has announced an exclusive collaboration with long-time admirer and acclaimed British actor Bill Nighy, unveiling a capsule collection that reinterprets the brand’s signature knitwear through a lens of modern tailoring and understated sophistication.
For over five decades, Nighy has counted John Smedley as a cornerstone of his personal style. Now, for the first time, he brings that lifelong connection to life in The Bill Nighy for John Smedley collection – a refined unisex range that captures his unique sense of ease, humour, and precision.
The collection features updated silhouettes with larger collars, defined ribs, and sharp yet relaxed fits. Among the highlights are a cardigan and waistcoat designed as a twin set, inspired by classic suiting, and a cashmere and merino Long Johns set – a staple for Nighy, who wears a pair on every film set.
Deep navy dominates the palette, reflecting Nighy’s preference for timeless tones, while thoughtful details infuse the garments with personal meaning. The label “Stay Modern” appears throughout the collection, alongside a small bird motif derived from an illustration Nighy has drawn on every film script during his career.
“If you’d told me when I was 17 that I’d be working with John Smedley to design a collection, I’d have arranged to be more cheerful in my early life,” said Nighy. “I wore John Smedley polos in the 60s and 70s in frontline defiance of the silk shirt open to the third button or the tie-dye t-shirts doused in patchouli oil. We were pioneers. As I got older, and Mod became Modernism, they remained an essential item. If I do nothing else with my life, there will always be this. Don’t forget to Disco.”

Crafted entirely in England, each piece is made from John Smedley’s signature fine-gauge merino wool, cashmere, and Sea Island Cotton – responsibly sourced and fully fashioned for longevity.
