Preview: Stoll’s New MATERIALIZATION Collection

Last week Knitting Industry Creative was in Barcelona for the world’s number one textile machinery exhibition ITMA 2019, where we had a guided tour of flat knitting machine builder Stoll’s latest knitwear collection – MATERIALIZATION.

Stoll’s Head of Fashion & Technology Joerg Hartmann and Designer Janina Bieberstein talked us through the inspiring new collection, which had its own space at the centre of the company’s booth at the show.

Here is a short introduction to MATERIALIZATION by Jörg Hartmann, Head of Fashion & Technology at Stoll.

“Overcoming the resistance of material represents the biggest obstacle in the creation and production of textiles. The latest Stoll collection reflects on this challenge, highlighting how versatile Stoll machines handle complicated materials of all kinds.

When we speak of materials in the context of knitting, we usually mean yarns – which are engineered to perform well in the knitting process. But in fact, there is a vast array of yarn-like materials we never think to use. We found inspiration in recycled plastic bags, silver foil, jute bags and other packaging materials.

This collection was also inspired by African farm workers, whose workwear is often fashioned from a mix of upcycled second-hand clothes and found waste materials. The resulting outfits are unconventional, but also highly functional, stylish and rich in materials.
