Last week, the highly-anticipated annual Graduate Fashion Week showcased collections of this years fashion and textiles graduates from arts universities and colleges from across the UK.
This years Visionary Knitwear Award was judged by six renowned industry professionals including Julien Macdonald, Gemma Metheringham (ex Karen Millen Creative Director, now Creative Director of Label/Mix) and Louise Trotter (Creative Director of Joseph) In an exciting and unusual move, Nottingham Trent University’s Jacaranda Brain and De Montfort University’s Fraser Miller were jointly presented as winners of the award.
Jacaranda Brain presented her breathtakingly sculptural knits, in bright white with vibrant dips of colour, that both exposed and visually distorted the female form using padded pocketed fabric and engineered shaped and textured stitches. The result was a dramatic and slightly unnerving parade of powerful women. Jacaranda was sponsored by innovative design-led Chinese yarn mill, UPW during her final year.
Fraser Miller’s eclectic mix of grids, white-framed irregular panels and hypnotic fine stripes were offset with textured large-scale floral jacquards in bold yet playful silhouettes not defined by gender. His collection entitled ‘An Abundance of Kin’ was inspired by the notion of interchangeable clothing passed between him, and his brothers and the sentimental value of this.
